The clamshell-shaped mass on the tree near the top of the image corresponds with the scar from a lopped-off limb and thus does not seem to be anything of note. The hook-shaped item below it, however, does not correspond to anything that is actually on the tree -- and, as you can see, is semi-transparent and even sticks out past the edge of the trunk! This is unlike anything I have ever seen before and I have to wonder whether I would have seen anything with a naked eye if I had shone a flashlight on this spot. Nothing was apparent in the dark.
